Terms
Terms of use
These terms explain the rules for using the httpstatus.codes website and its free, publicly accessible HTTP testing API.
Effective date: September 4, 2026
About the service
httpstatus.codes provides endpoints for testing HTTP status codes, redirects, delays, headers, streaming, generated response bodies, content encoding, request inspection, GeoIP behavior, and related client behavior. The service is operated by Sander Heilbron from the Netherlands and is provided free of charge.
Agreement to these terms
By accessing or using the website or API, you agree to these terms. If you use the service on behalf of an organization, you confirm that you are authorized to do so. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
The service is accessible internationally. You are responsible for ensuring that your use is permitted under the laws and regulations that apply to you.
Permitted use
You may use the service to test software, integrations, HTTP clients, monitoring systems, development tools, and educational examples. Automated use is permitted when it remains within published limits and does not unreasonably affect the service or other users.
Acceptable use
You must not:
- disrupt, overload, degrade, or attempt to disable the service;
- circumvent rate limits, access controls, or temporary blocks;
- use excessive automation, concurrency, delays, redirect chains, streams, generated response bodies, or bandwidth in a way that harms availability;
- probe or exploit the underlying infrastructure or security without prior written permission;
- use the service to distribute malware, facilitate abuse, mislead others, or violate applicable law or third-party rights;
- present the service as an open proxy, production redirect service, or guaranteed dependency; or
- encourage or assist another person in carrying out prohibited use.
Test data and sensitive information
Do not send personal data, passwords, access tokens, session cookies, private keys, confidential information, or production data to the service. Request-inspection endpoints are designed to return submitted request information to the caller, and custom response options may reproduce values supplied by you.
You are responsible for the test data you submit and for ensuring that you have the right to use it. Use fictional or otherwise non-sensitive data whenever possible.
Rate limits and protective measures
The service may apply global or endpoint-specific rate limits, concurrency limits, time-outs, request-size limits, and temporary blocks. These measures may change as reasonably necessary to protect security, availability, capacity, and fair access.
Requests may be limited or blocked when they appear abusive or place a disproportionate load on the service. A block may occasionally affect other users who share the same IP address.
Designed testing behavior
The service intentionally generates responses that may represent errors, redirects, interim responses, deprecated status codes, unusual headers, delays, streamed or compressed bodies, or other behavior that would not normally be desirable in a production service.
The documentation is provided for testing and reference purposes. GeoIP results are approximate and may not always reflect a user’s actual location. You are responsible for determining whether the service is suitable for your testing needs.
Availability and changes
The service is provided without a service-level commitment. We do not guarantee uninterrupted availability, continued support for a particular endpoint, or that every response will be suitable for a particular purpose.
We may change, restrict, suspend, or discontinue parts of the service where reasonably necessary for security, maintenance, legal compliance, capacity management, or further development. Where practical, material functional changes will be documented on this website.
No warranty
To the extent permitted by applicable law, the service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of availability, accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. Nothing in these terms affects warranties or rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by applicable law, the operator is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of data, loss of profit, business interruption, or damage resulting from reliance on the service as a production dependency.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability where doing so would be unlawful, including liability arising from intentional misconduct, gross negligence, or death or personal injury where such liability cannot be excluded under applicable law.
Suspension and termination
We may restrict or suspend access where reasonably necessary to prevent abuse, address a security incident, comply with law, or protect the service and its users. Because the service has no user accounts, you may stop using it at any time.
Privacy
The Privacy policy explains how limited data is processed when you use the website and API. The privacy policy is separate from these terms.
Governing law and international users
These terms are governed by the laws of the Netherlands. If you use the service as a consumer, this choice does not deprive you of mandatory protections provided by the law of the country where you habitually reside.
Disputes are subject to the competent courts of the Netherlands, except where mandatory applicable law gives you the right to bring proceedings in another jurisdiction.
Changes to these terms
These terms may be updated when the service, applicable law, or its operational requirements change. The effective date at the top of this page identifies the current version. Continued use after an update means the revised terms apply from that point, to the extent permitted by law.
